576's Restoration is Underway...

The most recent news in the restoration world is of N.C. & St. L 576... a locomotive that is long overdue for an overhaul. The Nashville Steam Preservation Society took the 576 under it's

wings in hope to one day restore the locomotive to operating conditions. After the recent road move from Centennial Park to a railroad access point on a local short line, the 576 has already had new parts applied to her old, dry, and rusty body.


The Nashville Steam Preservation Society finished applying and replacing parts on the locomotive's buffer - the "drawbar" of the locomotive that connects the locomotive to the tender. The process consisted of removing old parts such as the floating block, chafing block, buffer seat restrainers, spring seat retainers, and the buffer spring. Below are some photos of the project provided by the Nashville Steam Preservation Society.

The floating block can be seen here after being applied on top of the chafing block. A close to perfect fit is needed for this part of the tender to operate correctly, and is achieved by hand sanding high spots and low spots of the floating block face.
